Just finished this one for book club and what a fantastic read! I highly recommend it and would LOVE if it got taught in high school. Also, it will be turned into a movie hopefully by next year!

This is what resistance looks like: To be an immaculate burst of bloom through the hardness of concrete.
This is what survival & persistence looks like: To avalanche open during the hottest Texas summer & thrive against the oncoming traffic.
This is what hope looks like: To be the marigold against the grey, as if to say, "not everything buried goes away". #wandering #nature #resistence #poetry
Once we were mist / lit dust in a flourishing field / didn't have a tongue but had a howl / petunia skin / our hands two clumps of fog attached at the wrists / nature was something we were & / revered /

For as long as I can remember I have always believed (and seen) hauntings. They have never been scary or intimidating to me as much as they have been illuminating and full of a form of grace. Which is to say, not all hauntings come to one in darkness. Sometimes they arrive in the unflinching bright of the day. Which is to say, not all hauntings are nightmares-- some come to find you in a daydream.
When the mention of a girl haunting the story like a ghost, I viewed her as more of a guider than a haunter because some ghosts are better at showing than scaring.
My question is this: is there a ghost that guides you/haunts you towards your art, or is she more muse than ghost? When you are creating do you feel like there is someone standing right behind you, waiting? Do you feel like your creation is only complete once you no longer feel someone behind you, rather you see her, finally, staring right at you from the page? #BookClub #smallbacksofchildren #readingisfun #ilovereading
Onto the next book for book club!
Someone suggested that I open my book club up to Instagram folks so that is what I'm going to do starting with "The Small Backs of Children" by one of my favorite writers, Lidia Yuknavitch. I'm not entirely sure how this new project will unfold, but feel free to join the adventure and read along with me. You have until June 5th to finish and I'll be posting questions for you to ponder, as well as some of my favorite passages I read in the meantime.
Let's start here: What muse motivates you? How does she come to you, and do you always respond to her?

Finally finished it! There were many, many times I thought I couldn't get through the book because it felt so painstakingly boring, but it just took getting to page 144 before the book really started to unfold for me. I now see why this is one of Barak Obama's favorite novels. It is one of deep religious sincerity and meditation. Grace, justice, humility, generosity, and intelligence are all things that we should protect and strive to embody, as the book so delicately suggests. It is a simple book with a big message. A novel I definitely didn't enjoy in the beginning, but one I learned from and greatly appreciated reading it to the end. #Gilead #MarilynneRobinson #BookClub #ILoveReading #FemaleAuthors
I was feeling creative (and hungry). I made green spinach coconut curry with jasmine rice and spicy thai basil fried rice with thai chilies and basil from my garden along side a sweet and spicy vegetable medley. Hoorah! #dinner #homecookedmeal
Just finished The Handmaid's Tale (which was phenomenal and so was the 1st episode of the Hulu show!). Now I'm onto the next book which is Housekeeping my Marilynne Robinson.
It is a good day when you get to spend the afternoon reading brilliant books by brilliant women. #bookclub #ilovereading #femaleauthorsaremyfave #brilliantwomen #literature
